Meals
A healthy lifestyle always includes healthy eating. Ayurveda says “you are what you digest”. Ayurveda emphases foods that are cooked are easiest to digest. So when the digestion is compromised from illness or chemotherapy cooked foods should be your first choice.
Often when people are taking chemotherapy drugs their taste buds are compromised and nothing tastes as it should. Many state that foods have a metallic flavor. One of the first things I do with my clients is have them understand the 6 tastes. Sweet, Sour, Salty, Pungent, Astringent and Bitter. Once we identify which of these tastes are pleasing to you we can develop a eating strategy and recipes to fuel your body and strengthen your immune system. If your food tastes delicious you are more prone to eat more.
Another strategy I use is to suggest many small meals to be eaten through out the day. A typical serving may be divided into 4 servings, which can be eaten through
The food plan will focus on getting enough protein to encourage healing and strength. The daily meal will contain protein, fats and carbohydrates with no or limited processed foods. Often times when we have little or no appetite we don’t get enough protein to sustain the body and we begin to loose muscle.
Lastly the meals will be easy for you or your caregivers to prepare and store for your convenience. Once out of treatment many clients choose to continue to use the recipes and strategies learned to continue a healthy eating lifestyle.
